Powershift transmissions in construction and mining equipment shift under load, and the same fluid usually runs the clutches, the wet brakes, and the hydraulics. AMSOIL SAE 10W Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is the lightest of the three grades.

Reach for the 10W in cold climates or wherever the equipment manufacturer specifies a 10W. It carries the broadest specification coverage in the family and posts a 0.35 mm four-ball wear scar, the best result of the three grades.

What the formula does

  • Compatible with common metallic and non-metallic friction materials, with stable friction properties that help eliminate brake noise and vibration.
  • Non-slip friction properties help prevent clutch slippage, which is what causes glazing and friction-surface deposits.
  • Oxidation and thermal stability hold off varnish, deposits, and sludge, and the fluid doubles as a heat-transfer fluid to help cool hot-running equipment.

Cold-climate starts in the lightest powershift grade

AMSOIL SAE 10W Synthetic Powershift Transmission Fluid is the thinnest fluid in the powershift line at 7.1 cSt at 100°C and 41.9 cSt at 40°C, and it pours at -48°C (-54°F). In low temperatures it flows readily for dependable startup and post-startup protection, which is why cold-climate operations gravitate to this grade.

Climate alone does not decide the fill. Machines written for a heavier grade in the same yard take Powershift SAE 30, and reaching for a thinner fluid to make winter starts easier moves the sump away from the requirement the machine was built around.

Coverage changes when the grade changes

Specification coverage is not uniform across the three powershift grades, so a substitution is never a neutral swap. Dana Powershift Transmission service appears on the SAE 10W listing, while the CD-50 manual transmission requirement is carried by the heaviest grade instead. Some requirements run across all three grades and some sit on only one, so a machine written up against a particular requirement needs the grade that carries it. A 0.35 mm scar in the four-ball wear test

The four-ball wear test (ASTM D4172B at 40 kg, 75°C, 1200 rpm, one hour) measures the scar a rotating ball leaves on three stationary ones, and this grade produced a 0.35 mm result, the smallest of the three powershift fluids. For an operator uneasy about whether a light fill can carry gear and bearing loads, the lightest grade posting the smallest scar is useful context. A bench test is not a job site, so the grade the equipment manufacturer specifies still governs.

Powershift duty and hydrostatic duty are different jobs

This fluid family is formulated for powershift and manual transmissions, wet brakes, and final drives in equipment such as dozers, wheel loaders, crawlers, backhoe loaders, road graders, cranes, and mining machines. Heavy-duty manual transmissions, off-road fork trucks, harbor-handling and railway equipment, and commercial marine applications appear on the same list.
