The most common source. The gasket between the pan and the case hardens with heat and age, and pan bolts loosen over time. Usually the cheapest leak to fix.
A transmission is a sealed system, so any fluid on the ground came from a failure rather than normal consumption. That makes a leak easier to diagnose than most problems, because the fluid leaves a trail back to its source.
Most leaks start at a gasket, a seal, or a line fitting, and most are far cheaper to fix than the damage they cause if ignored. The sections below cover where to look first and how urgent the repair is.
A handful of places account for the large majority of leaks. Working through them in order of likelihood saves a lot of time under the vehicle.

Metal or rubber lines run fluid to a cooler in the radiator. They corrode, chafe where they touch the frame, and loosen at the fittings on both ends.
Where the driveshaft or axles enter the transmission, a spinning seal keeps fluid in. These harden and crack, leaving fluid on the inside of a wheel or along the driveshaft.
The seal where the tube enters the case dries out and lets fluid weep. Easy to overlook because the fluid runs down the side of the case before dripping.
A leaking converter seal drips near the bellhousing at the front of the transmission. This one is labor-heavy because the transmission has to come out.
Where the lines meet the radiator, the fittings can weep or the cooler itself can fail internally. An internal failure mixes coolant with the fluid instead of dripping.
Position narrows the list faster than anything else. Park over clean cardboard overnight, then map where the drips land relative to the vehicle.
Fluid runs and drips away from where it started, so the spot on the ground marks the low point rather than the source. Trace upward along the wet path with a flashlight until you find dry metal above wet metal.

It depends entirely on the rate. A slow weep that leaves a coin-sized spot over a week is worth scheduling a repair for, and driving normally in the meantime is generally fine as long as you keep the level topped up and check it often.
A leak that leaves a visible puddle after every trip is a different situation. Losing fluid faster than you notice puts you one long drive away from a slipping transmission, and the repair bill moves from a gasket to a rebuild.
The one case that justifies stopping immediately is coolant contamination, which shows up as pink or milky fluid. Coolant attacks the friction material and the seals quickly.
Age and heat account for most of them. Gaskets and seals are rubber or composite parts that harden and shrink over years of heat cycling until they no longer seal against the metal. The rest come from mechanical causes such as corroded cooler lines, a loose pan bolt or drain plug, road debris striking the pan, or a seal damaged during a previous repair.
It depends almost entirely on which part is leaking rather than on the part itself. A pan gasket or a cooler line is inexpensive because the access is easy, while a front pump or torque converter seal costs substantially more because the transmission has to come out to reach it. Getting the source identified before authorizing work is the single biggest factor in what you end up paying.
Stop-leak products work by swelling seals, which can slow a weep from a hardened seal for a while. They do nothing for a leaking gasket, a loose fitting, or a cracked line, and they change the properties of the fluid in ways the transmission was not designed around. Treat them as a way to buy time before a proper repair rather than as the repair.
Fluid pools in the pan when the engine is off and circulates through the transmission when it is running, so a low-lying leak at the pan or drain plug drips most while parked. Leaks that appear mainly while driving tend to be pressure-related, coming from cooler lines or the front seal. Which pattern you see is a useful clue about where to look.
As long as you check the level often enough to keep it in range, a slow weep is not an emergency. The practical risk is forgetting, since the level drops gradually and the first real symptom is usually slipping. Check it weekly, keep fluid on hand, and schedule the repair rather than letting it run indefinitely.
