Low transmission fluid shows up as a shifting problem long before it shows up as a puddle on the driveway. The fluid works as both a hydraulic fluid and a lubricant, so when the level drops the transmission loses the pressure it needs to shift and the film that protects the parts doing the work.
Most of the signs below mean the level has fallen far enough for the pump to pull in air along with fluid. Catching them early is usually the difference between adding fluid and rebuilding a transmission.
The symptoms tend to arrive in a rough order. Shift quality goes first, then noise, then heat, and by the time the transmission slips under load the level has usually been low for a while.

Heat is the second problem. A low level has less capacity to absorb heat, and heat is what breaks the fluid down and hardens the seals. A transmission that overheats once can develop a leak that makes the level drop faster from then on.
Left alone, that sequence ends in a rebuild. A transmission that slips is worth checking the same week rather than the same season.
A low level and worn-out fluid produce overlapping symptoms, and a vehicle can easily have both at once. The difference shows up on the dipstick.
Level tells you how much is in there. Condition tells you whether what is in there can still do the job. Fluid that is dark brown, smells burnt, or leaves grit on a clean rag has broken down and needs replacing even when the level reads full.

Yes, and shifting problems are usually the first thing you notice. An automatic transmission shifts by routing pressurized fluid to clutch packs, so when the level drops the pump cannot build pressure fast enough and shifts land late, hard, or in the wrong gear. Manual gearboxes show it differently, usually as notchy engagement and more noise, because the fluid there is lubricating rather than actuating.
Short trips at low speed to reach a shop are usually survivable, but continued driving is not worth the risk. Slipping clutch packs generate heat and shed friction material into the fluid, which then circulates through the valve body and accelerates the damage. If the transmission is slipping or overheating, the cheaper decision is almost always to stop driving it.
Nearly always. A transmission is a closed system that does not burn fluid the way an engine burns a little oil, so a level that has dropped went somewhere. The usual suspects are the pan gasket, the cooler lines running to the radiator, the axle or output shaft seals, and the dipstick tube seal. The exception is a recent service where the transmission was simply not filled to the correct level.
It can stop the slipping if a low level was the only problem and you catch it early. It will not undo damage already done to the friction material, and it will not fix slipping caused by worn clutch packs or a failing valve body. Top up, drive it, and if the slipping continues the problem is mechanical rather than a level issue.
Add in small amounts and re-check between each one, because the span between the low and full marks is smaller than most people expect and overfilling causes its own problems. Overfilled fluid foams as the rotating parts whip air into it, and foamy fluid cannot hold pressure.
