Transmission fluid is not one product. It is six or so distinct families built for mechanically different jobs, and the friction properties that make one work correctly are exactly what make it wrong somewhere else.

Each family below exists because the hardware asks something different from the fluid. The differences are mostly about friction: how much grip the fluid allows between surfaces that need to slip in a controlled way.

For dirt bikes, V-twins, ATVs, and UTVs, where the engine, transmission, and wet clutch often share one sump and the fluid has to serve all three.
For zero-turn mowers, garden tractors, and equipment with a hydrostatic drive, where the fluid transmits power continuously under heat and load.
The clearest example is CVT fluid against automatic transmission fluid. A CVT belt needs the fluid to help it grip the pulleys, while an automatic needs its clutch packs to slide into engagement smoothly. Put automatic fluid in a CVT and the belt slips, which destroys the pulleys in short order.
The same logic applies to wet clutches on a motorcycle or ATV. A passenger-car fluid carries friction modifiers designed to reduce grip, and those additives can make a wet clutch slip under power.
Manual gearboxes fail differently. A fluid that is too slippery keeps the synchronizer rings from grabbing, so the shifter grinds going into gear even though nothing is worn out.

Topping up with the wrong family to limp a short distance is less damaging than running the transmission dry, but it is genuinely a last resort. Even a partial fill of the wrong fluid changes the friction behavior of the whole sump. If it happens, plan on a full fluid exchange rather than assuming it diluted away.

Service records are the reliable answer, and color is not, since most automatic fluids share the same red dye regardless of formulation.
