It stays fluid in deep cold, with a pour point of -65°C, so the first shifts on a winter morning are not waiting on thick oil. It is also backward compatible in older GM automatics that called for DEXRON III.
Matching the transmission's low-viscosity requirement
The phrase fuel-efficient does not settle fitment on its own. Cold, thick automatic transmission fluid lengthens shift times, which is why cold-flow behavior matters as much as the headline viscosity number in a low-viscosity application. Signature Series Fuel-Efficient ATF has a pour point of -65°C (-85°F), a Brookfield viscosity of 7,676 cP at -40°C, and a viscosity index of 159.
Those cold-flow properties support quicker shift response, shorter warm-up times, and better energy efficiency, which is the combination the specification is written around. The first shifts on a winter morning are not waiting on fluid that has gone stiff in the pan.
Heat resistance in the Signature Series additive system
High concentrations of antioxidants make the Signature Series formulation naturally heat resistant. Deposits are the reason that matters: sludge and varnish restrict narrow oil passages and contribute to clutch glazing, and a low-viscosity fluid spends its working life in exactly those passages.
Oxidation resistance for the line was measured on the conventional grade rather than on this one. An independent third-party lab ran the Aluminum Beaker Oxidation Test, an industry-standardized measure of how long a transmission fluid resists oxidation, on Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic ATF pulled after 180,000 severe-service miles. The used fluid resisted oxidation longer than new fluid must in order to meet the Chrysler ATF requirement.
Where this fluid crosses over, and where it does not
The formula is backward compatible in older GM automatic transmissions that called for DEXRON III, because the DEXRON VI requirement supersedes the obsolete DEXRON III. The substitution runs one way only, since an obsolete fluid is not a stand-in inside a transmission designed around the newer requirement.
Toyota coverage is narrower than it first appears.
