Product overview

Towing, stop-and-go traffic, and hot weather all push transmission temperatures up, and heat is what breaks an automatic transmission fluid down. Once that happens, sludge and varnish start clogging the narrow passages and clutch packs that modern transmissions depend on.

AMSOIL ran Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF for 180,000 severe-service miles in Las Vegas taxi cabs, then pulled a transmission apart to look at it. The valve body came out virtually free of sludge, the clutch plates earned a rating of good for wear, which is the highest rating available, and the fluid still held 83 percent of its original oxidation inhibitors.

Why a multi-vehicle ATF is not a universal ATF

Multi-vehicle describes how many published requirements one formula answers, not a promise that it answers all of them. Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF is listed for transmissions, hydraulic systems, power steering systems, and other applications that call for a named requirement, and those named requirements include Allison C-4 and TES-389, Ford MERCON and MERCON V, GM DEXRON II and DEXRON III, Chrysler ATF+4, and Toyota Type T, T-II, T-III, and T-IV. The question that decides the fill is whether the transmission calls for something on that list.

Applications built around a thinner fluid are a separate decision. This grade is 7.5 cSt at 100°C, while Signature Series Fuel-Efficient ATF is 6.3 cSt and Signature Series ULV ATF is 4.5 cSt, and each grade carries its own requirement list. Viscosity is not a matter of preference in an automatic transmission, so the published requirement decides the grade.

What the FZG wear test measured

Varying speeds and loads multiply torque and put extreme stress on gears and bearings. Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF is built with high film strength plus anti-wear and extreme-pressure additives, so a protective layer stays between loaded parts during severe service.

In the industry-standard FZG wear test, a sample that had already covered 180,000 severe-service miles passed at the highest stage, and the result exceeded the Ford MERCON V and Chrysler ATF requirements for new fluid. On the four-ball wear test under ASTM D4172, run at 40 kg, 75°C, and 1,200 rpm for one hour, the fluid returns a 0.39 mm wear scar.

How shift feel holds up as the fluid ages

Shift quality rests on three friction properties at once: clutch-holding capacity, which is static friction; torque-transfer ability, which is dynamic friction; and anti-shudder control for a slipping torque converter clutch. Modern transmissions are smaller and handle more horsepower and torque while still being expected to shift smoothly, so the friction modifier package in Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF is tuned for all three at the same time.

Fluid analysis after 180,000 severe-service miles found friction properties nearly identical to new fluid. A friction balance that stays put is what keeps engagement timing predictable as the miles accumulate, which is the difference between a transmission that still shifts cleanly at high mileage and one that has started to feel vague between gears.

Towing, severe service, and drain planning

Hauling and towing in a truck, van, SUV, or commercial vehicle raises operating temperature, and heat is what starts the breakdown that allows metal-to-metal contact along with sludge and deposits. Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF is formulated for that duty and stays fluid in sub-zero conditions, with a pour point of -53°C (-63°F) and a Brookfield viscosity of 9,755 cP at -40°C.

Normal service follows the vehicle manufacturer's normal-service interval. Severe service supports double the vehicle manufacturer's severe-service drain interval in passenger cars and light trucks, and outside the United States and Canada the manufacturer's recommended interval applies.
