Product overview

A dual-clutch transmission shifts by handing torque from one wet clutch to the other, so the fluid controls clutch engagement and gear lubrication at the same time. Get the friction balance wrong and shifts turn harsh or slow.

AMSOIL 100% Synthetic DCT Fluid is formulated for that job, with a pour point of -58°C for cold-morning shifts and the thermal stability a dual-clutch box needs in stop-and-go traffic.

What the formula does

  • Engineered to prevent shudder and keep synchronizer engagement stable in stop-and-go traffic.
  • High film strength with anti-wear and extreme-pressure additives protects gears, bearings, and other metal surfaces in high-heat operation.
  • Holds its viscosity under the stress of high-horsepower, high-torque driving.

A dual-clutch gearbox is a manual at heart

A dual-clutch transmission is built on manual-transmission architecture, essentially two manual gearboxes sharing one housing, each with its own clutch. While one clutch carries the load, the other already has the next gear staged, which is how a DCT changes ratios while minimizing the interruption of power.

That layout sets the fluid's job. It lubricates gear sets and promotes stable synchronizer engagement while also governing how the clutches take up load, which is not what a torque-converter automatic asks of its fluid. Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF is written for planetary automatics and carries its own specification list, so a dual-clutch gearbox needs a fluid listed against dual-clutch specifications instead.

Check the dual-clutch specification before ordering

Dual-clutch designs are not built alike. Some run their clutch packs in oil and some do not, and the fluid callout changes with the design, which is why the specification list decides this rather than the gearbox type. The published coverage on this page spans BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pentosin, Volvo, Volkswagen, and Audi callouts, so the match comes from the exact requirement rather than the badge on the tailgate.

Powersports machines have adopted the same layout, which makes that check more important rather than less. A Can-Am Maverick R is served by AMSOIL Synthetic ATV/UTV Dual-Clutch Transmission Fluid, so a shared gearbox type is never on its own a reason to assume one fluid covers both.

Shudder and lurching at parking-lot speeds

Split-second shifts at speed are the easy part of a dual-clutch transmission. The hard part is creeping through traffic, where a DCT can shudder or lurch as a clutch takes up load at low speed. AMSOIL 100% Synthetic DCT Fluid is engineered to prevent shudder in exactly that situation, and its durability keeps behavior stable through stop-and-go driving.

Consistent frictional properties also promote stable synchronizer engagements, which helps extend the life of the transmission. That is the slower-moving half of the result, and it is the reason a dual-clutch fluid is judged on how its friction behavior holds up over time rather than on how it feels when it is new.

Holding viscosity when the gearbox runs hot

High-temperature dual-clutch units are hard on a fluid's protective additives. AMSOIL 100% Synthetic DCT Fluid resists that extreme heat and protects gears, bearings, and other vital parts through it, with high film strength plus anti-wear and extreme-pressure additives aimed at the metal surfaces inside a DCT. Maintaining proper viscosity at temperature extremes is what keeps that protection in place during the intense conditions native to high-performance sports sedans and supercars.

Transmission fluid can also break down as it is squeezed between gear teeth, and once it thins out it carries less load. This formula holds a consistent viscosity under that stress, including in high-horsepower, high-torque applications, measuring 7.7 cSt at 100°C with a viscosity index of 171 and a flash point of 230°C (446°F).

Details and questions

Is DCT fluid the same as automatic transmission fluid?

No. Dual-clutch transmissions require a DCT-specific fluid. Confirm the match in the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide for the year, make, model, and engine.

What is dual-clutch transmission fluid?

A dual-clutch transmission shifts by handing torque from one wet clutch to the other, so the fluid controls clutch engagement and gear lubrication at the same time. Get the friction balance wrong and shifts turn harsh or slow, which is why a conventional automatic transmission fluid is not a substitute.

How often should DCT fluid be changed?

Change according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Order AMSOIL Synthetic DCT Fluid online in quart bottles or cases of 12.

Does AMSOIL Synthetic DCT Fluid help with shudder?

It is engineered to prevent shudder and keep synchronizer engagement stable in stop-and-go traffic, and it holds its viscosity under the stress of high-horsepower, high-torque driving.

How does it perform in cold weather?

Pour point is -58°C (-72°F), so the fluid still moves on a cold morning before the gearbox warms up.

Which dual-clutch applications does it cover?

Dual-clutch gearboxes from BMW, Chrysler, Ferrari, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Renault, Volvo, VW, Audi, and McLaren, with the current list in the specifications section on this page. Side-by-sides are a separate application, and the Can-Am Maverick R takes AMSOIL Synthetic ATV/UTV Dual-Clutch Transmission Fluid.
