Product overview
Buses, refuse trucks, and other heavy-duty automatics spend the day at low speed and high load, which is the hardest combination a transmission fluid faces. Torque-Drive ATF is the heavy-duty formula for on-highway and off-highway equipment.
It covers the common Allison and heavy-duty European specifications and stays pumpable at -40°C, so equipment parked outside overnight is not fighting thick fluid at startup.
Where this fluid fits
Operations that benefit from Torque-Drive include:
- Municipal and transit buses
- Motor coaches and motor homes
- Garbage haulers and dump trucks
- Delivery vans and line-haul trucks
- Emergency vehicles and school buses
- Utility vehicles, cement trucks, and tow trucks
One fluid across a mixed fleet
A yard running Allison, MAN, Voith, and ZF transmissions side by side normally means stocking several different part numbers and trusting that the right one reaches the right unit. Torque-Drive is a multi-functional fluid built for that situation, meeting the most stringent heavy-duty transmission specifications and helping eliminate compatibility concerns and misapplication.
Coverage spans Allison, Ford, GM, Isuzu, and JASO requirements on the domestic and Japanese side, and MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Voith, Volvo, and ZF on the European side, which is what lets one fluid serve a mixed fleet. The specification list on this page carries the full published set. Heavy-duty manual gearboxes are a separate fill, and equipment specifying an SAE 50 transmission oil takes AMSOIL SAE 50 Long-Life Synthetic Transmission Oil.
How severe service wears a transmission fluid down
Severe-service operation can break a transmission fluid down until it allows damaging metal-to-metal contact and increased wear. Torque-Drive answers that with synthetic base oils and premium additives that deliver viscosity retention and high film strength, which helps prevent wear and helps reduce operating temperatures under those same conditions.
The four-ball wear test (ASTM D4172) puts a number on that film with a 0.41 mm scar. Kinematic viscosity is 7.3 cSt at 100°C and the viscosity index is 168, so the fluid keeps a usable thickness across the temperature swing a working transmission sees between the first start of the day and the last stop.
Oxidation, clutch glazing, and shift times
Oxidation byproducts destroy the sensitive friction characteristics of a transmission fluid, and shift quality degrades rapidly once that begins. The thermal and oxidative stability inherent in Torque-Drive helps keep clutch engagement consistent and smooth throughout the life of the fluid, maintaining proper coefficients of friction and helping prevent clutch glazing and elongated shift times.
A slower-than-normal oxidation rate is also what protects the hydraulic side of the transmission. It helps prevent the sludge that blocks small valves and the varnish that restricts component movement, and it reduces the oil thickening that slows shift times.
Cold starts, solenoid response, and drain timing
Torque-Drive does not contain the wax found in conventional automatic transmission fluids, so it flows in cold weather instead of thickening into something the transmission has to push. That cold-temperature fluidity is what allows the small, delicate, electronically controlled solenoids that trigger gear changes to operate properly, giving transmissions quick response times during cold operation and making them usable immediately upon startup.
Drain timing follows the equipment maker. Torque-Drive is used according to the extended service interval established by the original equipment manufacturer for the performance specifications it covers, so the schedule comes from the transmission rather than from the fluid. When a heavy-duty automatic is opened up after long hours, AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush is the pre-service cleaner listed for automatic transmissions, with a published treat rate scaled to sump volume.

Details and questions
Is Torque-Drive ATF for passenger cars?
Torque-Drive targets heavy-duty and severe-service automatic applications. Passenger cars and light trucks more often match Signature Series Multi-Vehicle ATF or OE Multi-Vehicle ATF. Confirm the application in the AMSOIL vehicle lookup guide.
Which vehicles and equipment use Torque-Drive ATF?
Municipal and transit buses, motor coaches and motor homes, garbage haulers and dump trucks, delivery vans and line-haul trucks, emergency vehicles and school buses, plus utility vehicles, cement trucks, and tow trucks.
Does Torque-Drive ATF cover Allison specifications?
It is listed for heavy-duty on-highway and off-highway automatics requiring Allison TES-295, TES-389, TES-668, and C-4, along with the other heavy-duty specifications shown on this page.
How does Torque-Drive ATF handle cold starts?
It stays pumpable at -40°C, so equipment parked outside overnight is not fighting thick fluid at startup. Brookfield viscosity is 8,278 cP at -40°C and pour point is -56°C (-69°F).
Which AMSOIL product fits a tractor or equipment transmission?
It depends on what the equipment specifies. Heavy-duty automatics take Torque-Drive ATF, powershift transmissions with wet brakes take Powershift SAE 10W, Powershift SAE 30, or Powershift SAE 50, and hydrostatic mower drives take 20W-50 Synthetic Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid.
Is Torque-Drive ATF sold in bulk sizes?
It comes in gallon jugs, 2.5 gallon jugs, 55 gallon drums, and 275 gallon totes. Order Torque-Drive ATF online. To unlock up to 25% off, add an AMSOIL Preferred Customer membership to the same cart and qualifying products switch to member pricing immediately, with no separate sign-up step.
